CIA’s U-2 flights and the UFO wave

A classified aircraft offered a mundane explanation for some puzzling lights.

High-altitude U-2 test flights in the 1950s helped generate UFO reports, according to a historical account released by the CIA. At the time, ordinary commercial aircraft flew far below the U-2’s operating altitude. Around sunset, an aircraft at roughly 20,000 feet could be in darkness while a U-2 much higher up remained illuminated by the Sun.
A bright, apparently unusual object could therefore be visible to observers who had no reason to expect a secret reconnaissance aircraft above them. The account says some sightings were linked to U-2 activity; it does not establish that every report from the period had that explanation. Nor does it suggest that witnesses invented what they saw.
The episode illustrates how secrecy, unfamiliar technology and viewing conditions can combine to create sincere but difficult-to-identify observations. It is a documented example of a prosaic explanation operating in a historical context, not a universal answer to UFO reports. [1]
